Scrubbies Baseball 2022

May 8th

The Scrubs hitting absolute rock bottom offensively against the 'Cudas. In 6 games the scrubbies had 226 plate appearances, and hit a total of two (yes, you read that right, 2) home runs (both by Matt Olson). Without Olson, the team's slash line was an unheard of .228/.302/..283. Again, you read that right - a slugging percentage below the team's miserable on base percentage. Even with Olson the slugging percentage (.337) was barely above the on base percentage (.333). League historians are hard at work researching (aren't you Dave?) whether this is the worst display of power in a six game series in league history.

Making this stat even harder to fathom? For all 6 games Will Smith (5-5-1) at catcher; Olson (1-6-6-1) at 1st; 3 games B Rodgers (0-0-0-1) at 2B; Machado (0-0-0-1) at 3B for all 6, and always some combination of Schwarber (1-6-5-1), Winker (5-6-5-1) Pollock (5-6-5-1) or Alvarez (1-6-6-1) in the OF. Only 14 extra base hits the entire series for the scrubs.

In no particular order because it makes for a better story . . .

After being shut out for the first time in their last series against the Sultans, the scrubs suffered their second shutout at the hands (fins?) of the 'Cudas 6-0. In another game, the scrubbies were being shutout 4-0 with 2 outs in the bottom of the 9th before a walk and an Olson HR made the final score 4-2.

In yet another game even though the scrubs had a grand total of 8 hits, all singles, (and only one inning with more than one hit) but nevertheless led 2-1 going to the bottom of the 8th. In comes the ace V reliever who immediately gives up 3 runs (and 1 HR) to lose 4-2. The Scrubs fourth loss? Trailing 1-0 going into the 7th, in comes the team's other V reliever who gives up a double, HR, double, double and a triple (and 2 of those doubles should have been HR's) to lose 7-2.

Could the scrubs win even 1 game? Yes, in fact they did get 2 wins despite the nightmare offense. Chris Bassitt threw the team's 7th shutout of the season. Scrubs win 6-0. How you ask? Two runs on a passed ball - fast runner on 2nd) in the first, and a mad rally in the 2nd consisting of a walk, HBP, E-3, and two singles. The other win? Scrubbies being 1-hit by the Cudas through 7 innings, but the one hit Olson's other HR and the game tied 1-1 going into the 8th. Scrubbies get a grand total of 5 hits but hits 2 and 3 in the 8th and 4 and 5 in the 9th are  timely and scrubs win 3-1. Bassitt goes 2-0, 1 ER in 16 IP (0.56 ERA).

Old team updates

April 2nd

Despite a shaky start, scrubs take 4 of 6 from the Crush.

First two games the teams trade beatings. Scrubs win 13-4 and Crush wins 13-7 with neither games as close as indicated by the score.

But Adam Wainwright comes through big-time with 2 wins, both complete games, one a shutout. This was the 5th shutout thrown by Scrub pitchers so far this season.

Scrubbies defense bends but doesn't break in two more games - the 3rd and 4th one run wins of the season. Crush had tying run on in 8th inning of one game, and tying and go ahead runs in in 8th inning of the other before Scrub relievers finally shut the door.

Four series into the season scrubs are at 16-8, their best start in many years. Next up is the Storm scheduled for a week from today.

==========

March

Scrubs playing a home series on the road due to scheduling problems win 4 of 6 against the firehouse. Coulda been better, coulda been worse.

Game 1 through 8 innings scrubs give up only 3 hits and lead 4-2. On comes Casey Sadler ABLV. Roll a zero - just a single. A 1? Double, not an HR. 8's and 9's - all outs. So he immediately gives up a walk, double, sac fly and another double. But for the V Firehouse would have had a walk-off win. No threats by either team until the 12th when a walk, a Magnificent Sierra pinch run stolen base, an intentional walk followed by an unintentional walk and then a squib single brings home the go ahead run. Scrubs hang on for their second 1 run win of the season, 5-4.

Game 2 scrubs lead 4-0 going into the 5th. Two outs, runner who had singled on second, batter who was walked on first with Manny Machado at the plate followed by the pitcher. Despite there being no open base, Firehouse walks Machado to load the bases and Wade Miley's 6 on 66 is a triple to blow the game open. That's followed by a walk and then a 3 run HR by Will Smith for the 10-3 win. Miley had a shutout into the 9th but gave up a walk and double to drop to a D and then a meaningless HR (except as to his ERA).

Game 3 was a see-saw battle. Scrubs up 2-0; trail 3-2; score 2 to take a 4-3 lead but Firehouse score the tying run on 3 walks and a sac fly going into the 8th. Top of the 8th Manny Machado hits a solo shot for a 5-4 lead. But Firehouse singles, puts in a fast pinch runner on who then scores on a double. Tied at 5-5 going to the 9th. Top of 9 scrubs get a leadoff single. Sierra pinch runs and steals 2d, and then moves to 3rd base on a ground out. With 2 outs, Sierra breaks for the plate with nearly a 50-50 chance of being safe but is tagged out at home on a close play. Scrubbies A&C reliever immediately gives up a walk followed by a walk off double.

Game 5 Logan Webb is masterful. A 5-0 shutout with Webb giving up only a lead off single to the first batter of the game who was then thrown out attempting to steal 3rd; and then 2 more singles and a double, all in different innings.

Game 6, visions of a 5-win series dance in the scrubbies heads. Berti and Vaughn both hit 2 HR's,  Berti also hits a double and Ruff puts another out of the park. Firehouse wins 10-6. But there's more to the story. At season start Nicky Lopez needed 6 games rest to become an ironman. For the third time in 12 games, Rodgers SS-8 playing for Lopez. With one out and runners on 1st and second Rodgers fails to turn two on a play Lopez would easily make. Now 2 outs and runners on 1st and 3rd, Firehouse takes advantage by hitting a single, HR, another single, followed by back to back jacks for
3 HRs and 5 runs - the difference in the game, all coming in after the inning should have been over.

Next series a weekday night affair on a date TBD with the Angels
