Scrubs playing a home series on the road due to scheduling problems win 4 of 6 against the firehouse. Coulda been better, coulda been worse.
Game 1 through 8 innings scrubs give up only 3 hits and lead 4-2. On comes Casey Sadler ABLV. Roll a zero - just a single. A 1? Double, not an HR. 8's and 9's - all outs. So he immediately gives up a walk, double, sac fly and another double. But for the V Firehouse would have had a walk-off win. No threats by either team until the 12th when a walk, a Magnificent Sierra pinch run stolen base, an intentional walk followed by an unintentional walk and then a squib single brings home the go ahead run. Scrubs hang on for their second 1 run win of the season, 5-4.
Game 2 scrubs lead 4-0 going into the 5th. Two outs, runner who had singled on second, batter who was walked on first with Manny Machado at the plate followed by the pitcher. Despite there being no open base, Firehouse walks Machado to load the bases and Wade Miley's 6 on 66 is a triple to blow the game open. That's followed by a walk and then a 3 run HR by Will Smith for the 10-3 win. Miley had a shutout into the 9th but gave up a walk and double to drop to a D and then a meaningless HR (except as to his ERA).
Game 3 was a see-saw battle. Scrubs up 2-0; trail 3-2; score 2 to take a 4-3 lead but Firehouse score the tying run on 3 walks and a sac fly going into the 8th. Top of the 8th Manny Machado hits a solo shot for a 5-4 lead. But Firehouse singles, puts in a fast pinch runner on who then scores on a double. Tied at 5-5 going to the 9th. Top of 9 scrubs get a leadoff single. Sierra pinch runs and steals 2d, and then moves to 3rd base on a ground out. With 2 outs, Sierra breaks for the plate with nearly a 50-50 chance of being safe but is tagged out at home on a close play. Scrubbies A&C reliever immediately gives up a walk followed by a walk off double.
Game 5 Logan Webb is masterful. A 5-0 shutout with Webb giving up only a lead off single to the first batter of the game who was then thrown out attempting to steal 3rd; and then 2 more singles and a double, all in different innings.
Game 6, visions of a 5-win series dance in the scrubbies heads. Berti and Vaughn both hit 2 HR's, Berti also hits a double and Ruff puts another out of the park. Firehouse wins 10-6. But there's more to the story. At season start Nicky Lopez needed 6 games rest to become an ironman. For the third time in 12 games, Rodgers SS-8 playing for Lopez. With one out and runners on 1st and second Rodgers fails to turn two on a play Lopez would easily make. Now 2 outs and runners on 1st and 3rd, Firehouse takes advantage by hitting a single, HR, another single, followed by back to back jacks for
3 HRs and 5 runs - the difference in the game, all coming in after the inning should have been over.
Next series a weekday night affair on a date TBD with the Angels
