Misfits would start with three on the road. Gerrit Cole gets the nod for the first game
while the Trucks oppose with Chris Archer.
Cole would only make it to the 4th in this one after giving up 5 runs in
the first inning. Altuve would lead off
the inning with a single, followed by three straight walks, and capped off with
an error Lucas Duda that would allow two runs to score. A strike out, a single, and two pop outs
would allow Cole to finish the frame.
The game stayed at 5-0 until the top of the 4th when the Misfits would
scratch out a run to narrow the lead a little.
The Trucks came right back though and put up a run to chase Cole when
his turn at the plate came up in the fifth.
CJ Cron would single and drive in run as Coleâ's replacement at
the plate. The Misfits managed to put a
2 spot on the score board getting to within 3 runs of the Trucks. Chris Archer would be lifted in the 6th for a
pinch hitter and the Misfits took advantage of the Trucks bullpen scoring 3 times in the 7th
on a bases loaded triple by Adam Eaton and then winning it in the ninth on a
Seth Smith solo shot. Mark Melancon
would come in to pitch a perfect 9th for his 22nd save of the season.
GAME 2
This would be a match up of hard luck Julio Terehan for the
Misfits against Andrew Cashner for the Trucks.
Both pitchers would go the distance, but for different reasons. The Misfits and Trucks would both notch a run
in the first. This was just the
beginning for the Misfits, but the end for the Trucks, well at least till the
9th. The Misfits would take the lead in
the 4th on a 2 run homer from Troy Tulowitzki.
The Misfits were not done though, they added a big 7 spot in the 6th and
3 more in the 8th to really ice this one for Mr. Terehan. The Misfits would win this one 13 - 2.
GAME 3
This game had Jason Hammel starting for the Misfits and Corey
Kluber going for the Trucks. Both
pitchers did an adequate job in their starting assignment. Hammel would last 6, giving up 6 runs to the
Trucks hitters exiting the game trailing 6-2.
Familia, Miller, Thayer, Thornton, and Melancon would combine for 11
scoreless innings to win this thriller.
Kluber would make it into the 9th before things started to unravel. The Misfits would score 4 in the top of the
9th to tie it up and send it to extra innings.
Crockett was responsible for the 6th run, but would team up with Watson
and Russell to get into the 17th before Gomez gives up a 2 run homer to Tulo,
his 10th on the year. Misfits pull this
one out in 17 innings, 8-6.
GAME 4
The Misfits journey home to finish this 6 game set sending Adam
Wainwright to the mound to oppose Henderson Alvarez. This was billed as a pitchers duel and it
didn't disappoint a single fan.
Wainwright would hold the Trucks to a single run on 5 hits and a walk
through 11 innings. Alvarez matched
Wainwright pitch for pitch through 7 before being lifted for a pinch hitter in
the 8th. The Misfits would get a run in
the bottom of the 12th to make Matt Thornton a winner, 2-1.
GAME 5
Jake Arrietta takes the mound for the Trucks and Josh Collmenter
will do the same for the home team. Both
pitchers go the distance in this one as there was only a single run scored in
the game. Melky Cabrera would lead off
the 4th with a single. One out later,
Robinson Cano would gap one that took a funny bounce off the wall for an RBI
triple. Jake Arrietta would only
surrender 7 hits and a walk while striking out 9. Josh Collmenter threw a 5 hit shut out,
giving up no walks, and striking out 8.
Misfits win this one, 1-0
GAME 6
Game 6 is a rematch from game 1. Cole vs. Archer. All the
frustration of this series would come out in this last game as the Trucks would
rap out 14 hits scoring 9 runs without any errors in defeating the Misfits
9-3. The first inning was most of the
fireworks happening as the Trucks put the Misfits into a 4-0 hole after just
1/2 inning of play. The Misfits would
storm back though when Cabrera would lose a ball into the seats with Harrison
and Eaton on base to bring the Misfits within a run. The Bullpen was still trying to recover from
the 17 inning affair a few games earlier and thus were given the game off. Cole would hold the Trucks to just 4 runs
until the top of the 7th when the Trucks got 2 to expand their lead to
6-3. The Trucks would add on 3 more in
the 9th just to make sure that the Misfits didn't have yet one last
rally left in them to sweep the Trucks and possibly ruin their play off
hopes. Chris Archer went 7 in this one
before handing the ball off the Watson for the save.
