Scrubs v. Sharks, and the Scrubbies' luck finally changed for the better. Trailing 5-4 in the ninth, Scrubs score 3 runs on back-to-back HR's by Blackmon and Pollock to win 7-5.
Game 2 tied 1-1 in the 10th. Shark's V reliever turns what would have been a 2 run shot by Olson into an RBI double, but Scrubs don't care as they hold on for a 2-1 victory.
Game 3 tied 2-2 with 2 out and nobody on in the bottom of the ninth when the Scrubs' bullpen gives up a walk followed by a walk-off HR for a 2-1 win for the Sharks.
After three games where the Scrubs trailed or were tied in the ninth, the Scrubs score a run in the 6th to tie the game at 2-2 - and the teams then go 10 more innings without a run until AJ Pollock hits a walk-off HR in the bottom of the 15th for a 3-2 Scrub win. Scrubs' bullpen pitches 13 innings in relief (rain delay took Wacha out early) while giving up only 1 run, and the last 10 innings no runs, only three singles and no runner past first base. Scrubs up 3 games to one.
Game 5, Scrubs ride a 4 run 5th to a 6-4 victory. And in game 6 Scrubs hit like they haven't since the first series of the season, winning 14-2 behind Blackmon's 2 HR, 5 RBI game.
The 5-1 series win leaves the Scrubs 3 games behind the Sharks with 12 to play. Sharks still to play the Bombers and Tornados; Scrubs still have the Sultans and Pond Scum. Bad news for the Scrubs - two extra inning games and five close games have left the bullpen seriously depleted for the final two series of the season.
May 22nd
"it coulda been worse . . ."
. . . said the Scrub's manager after his series with the Bombers.
Consistent with this season's trend, the Bombers unloaded on the Scrubs
the first two games - 11HR's, 7 doubles and a triple for 23 runs (and
more extra base hits - 19) than the total Scrub hits in the first two
games.
Down 2 games to none, the Scrubs
exploded for 3 runs on 3 hits in the first inning of game 3 but got
only 3 singles - all in different innings - the rest of the
game. Nevertheless, the Scrubs hung on for a 3-2 win.
Exhausted
from their offensive outburst in game 3, the Scrubs manage two singles
in 8 innings against the Bombers in game 4, but send the minimum number
of batters to the plate as each single was followed by a DP. The Scrubs 3
runs in the 9th make the 5-3 final score look closer than the game
really was.
Down 3 games to 1 with C starters
in games 5 and 6, the Scrubs do the unexpected - 5 HR's power the Scrubs
to an 11-3 win in Game 5,
and for an encore the Scrubs put out 3
more HR's in the 5th inning of game 6 to win 7-4. Scrubs and Bombers
split series 3 games apiece.
May 6th
Scrubbie
fans nationwide â all three of them â silently wiped tears from their
face as instead of a W flag, a white flag of surrender was raised at the
friendly
confines following the May 6th APBA day. The Scrubs entered the day needing
big seriesâ against the Rattlers and Marlins to become relevant in the
wild card race. Instead, The Scrubsâ bats werenât just silent â closer
examination revealed their tongues had been
removed.
Game
1 v. Rattlers â Scrubs down 8-0 after 2 innings, 11-0 after 7. 11-2
final score â Scrubs manage 5 hits, none in the same inning, against the
Rattlers
D starter.
Game 2 â Things start to look up as Scrubs have a 5-3 lead with one out and nobody on in the bottom of the 9th. Against a string of Scrubsâ relievers
(A&C, A&C-, A, and BXYZ+ pitching as an A) Rattlers win on a two-out bases loaded triple 6-5.
Game 3 â Déjà vu all over again. Scrubs have a 4-1 lead with one out and nobody on in the bottom of the 9th. Against Scrub relievers (A&C, A&C-,
A and BXYZ+ pitching as an A) Rattlers win on a two out grand slam 5-4.
Down
three games to zero against the league doormat, the Scrubs explode in
Game 4 scoring 5 runs to win 5-4 against the Rattlersâ C- starter who
was really
a D as the Scrubs had an all lefty lineup.
In
game 5, the Scrubs have FIVE hits, four of them singles, off the
Rattlersâ D starter through 8.1 innings. But with one out and no one on
in the bottom
of the 9th, the Scrubs pay the Rattlers back for games 2
and 3. A walk and a HR? No. A bases clearing triple? Be serious. But the
Scrubs win 3-2 on a single, a pinch hit double to tie the game, followed
by a steal of third and a walk-off suicide squeeze
by Joe Panik. Scrubbie baseball at its best.
Game 6, Scrubs pound out 4 singles and 4 doubles for a 4-2 crushing of the Rattlers.
Depressed
as the Scrubs were after going only 3-3 v. the Rattlers, things only
got worse when after a 3 œ hour Hachten delay, the Scrubs and Marlins
met.
Despite the Marlins starting Câs in 5 of the 6 games, the result was;
Game 1 v. Marlins, Scrubs strand 10 runners and lose 4-3. The team hits only 10 hits, 7 singles, 3 doubles.
Game 2, Scrubs lose 5-3, getting only 7 hits â 3 singles, 4 doubles
Game
3 â the Scrubs lose their fourth one-run game of the day 4-3 again only
getting 7 hits âfive of them singles. Amazingly 4 of those singles came
in one
inning and the Scrubs DID NOT SCORE that inning.
Game 4 â Scrubs score 2 runs on 9 hits, 6 of those hits singles, and lose 6-2.
Game 5 â the only game won by the Scrubs against the Marlins. Scrubs strand 11, but still manage to win 9-2.
So
how to finish off such a dismal day? True Scrubbie fans know the answer
to that question â get shut-out 2-0 on a total of 7 hits, five of them
singles.
And only one inning with more than one hit, both singles.
But it couldaâ been worse â at least Iâm not the Sultans, (1-11 on May 6th) .
April 28th
Scrubs
v âCudas, Scrubs put up team batting average of .217 for the series,
but it is offset by the teamâs 6.79 ERA. Despite this, Scrubs eke out a
3-3 split.
Team batting MVP â Chuck McNasty - .366/.490/.927, 2 doubles, 7 HRâs and 14 RBIâs.
Team starter â Carlos Carrasco â 2-0, 1.80 ERA, 21 Kâs
Team reliever â Andrew Miller â 5 saves, 1.17 ERA
Noteworthy
Scrub achievement â the team has exactly one starting pitcher with a
winning record: John Lester, 4-1, with an eye-popping 6.38 ERA.
April 12th
Scrubs look in mirror; donât like what they see
The Scrubs and Trucks tangled on Wednesday night. Two experienced managers with similar philosophies, two strong teams with playoff hopes entering the season,
and both teams underperforming. First two games, Scrubs stink up the joint. Four singles and a lead-off double in game 1 and Scrubs lose 4-0.
Eight hits, 6 singles in game two and Scrubs lose 4-3 after blowing a bases loaded, no-out situation in the 7th.
Game 3, Scrubs explode â 16 hits including 5 HRâs and 6 doubles as Scrubs win 16-3.
Game 4, Trucks explode on Scrubs with a single, double, walk and then a grand slam against the Scrubs A&C reliever in the 7th. Trucks win.
Scrubs trail 3 games to 1 going into the last two games. And then the Trucks stink up the joint. Scrubs win game 5 allowing only 4 hits by the Trucks.
Game 6 Scrubs allow only 5 hits and tie the series at 3 games apiece. Result? Neither team gains any needed ground and one more series closer to elimination.
March 28th
It was ugly â Scrubs lose 4 games to the Silver Streak and split with the Tornados.
The only bright spot offensively was Matt Carpenter - .340/.389/.540 with 4 doubles and 2 HRâs out of the lead-off spot.
Starting pitcher Carlos Carrasco, who has filed a lawsuit against management for lack of support, throws 15 innings against the Tornados,
giving up only 2 runs for a 1.15 ERA - and doesnât get a win in either start.
Nine shutout innings in one game, but the Scrubs donât score a run and win until the 10th inning.
In the other start, Carrasco holds the Tornados scoreless through six, but gives up a 2 run HR in the 7th and leaves the game training 2-1. In the bullpen,
David (the vulture) Robertson goes 2-0 in relief with a 1.68 ERA.
Starters have an eye-popping 5.53 ERA; makes the bullpenâs 4.50 look good.
